Stripey

We received a very strange delivery one day. A large box containing one very small and frightened kitten.

The woman who brought Stripey to us had seen him wandering around the area for some weeks looking thinner and thinner. Not able to get near the frightened kitten most neighbours had not been able to do anything.

Finally the poor kitten had gotten so hungry that he had come into her house looking for food.

Her cat had been taken by surprise by this intruder and a fight had broken out. Alerted by all the noise the woman has rushed to see what was going on. She managed to catch Stripey and pop him into a box.

Then the problems really started. Stripey was terrified and was thrashing about in the box.

The woman called several rescue centres who were all full to capacity. Not knowing what else to do and having no way of keeping this little kitten she brought him to us. We were full too but we had one spare room which we could pop him into on a temporary basis.

Hoping that somehow this kitten belonged to a loving home who was missing him dreadfully we advertised in the lost and found section of the paper and called around to see if he was reported missing. After seven days of waiting it became all too obvious that he was not missing, he had no loving family desperately out looking for him, he had been abandoned.

He was very timid and couldn't bring himself to trust us. For the first few weeks we could only tell that he was okay because food was being eaten and the litter tray was being used. Then one day he peaked a nose out at us to see who it was who kept leaving all that nice food. Slowly but surely he came further and further out. We discovered that he liked to play with string and this really helped to build his confidence with us. Over the few months that he was in our care he became a very cuddly cat who liked nothing better than to lie on his back purring loudly. He was still nervous of new things and everything scary would be met with a little hiss.

When we felt that he was ready for a new home a lovely couple came forward to offer him an indoor home. As he was still a nervous kitten and after lots of discussion we felt that an outdoor home would not be the right environment for him.

His new owners love him to pieces and he has settled in to his new home better than we could ever have imagined. Feedback from his new owner shows just how far he has come from being the terrified little kitten who came to us just a few months ago.

"He has now settled into his new home and is lord of the manor these days!

He is very relaxed in his new home, and continues to be a very playful, cuddly boy who very much enjoys all the attention he can get!"

"When not engaged in some other aspect of his hectic life, he enjoys unwinding by watching "Riley TV", which shows back-to-back episodes of his favourite programme!"

All the volunteers at PAWSS are delighted with Stripeys new home and we wish him and his owners many happy years of snuggling on the sofa together
