Homechecking Basics

a)Visit the home that they want to keep your pet at. Ask for proof i.e a household bill, and if nessacary Drivers licence. You would be suprised how many folk are "not who they say they are".

b)Check the cage, hutch and if its to let a cat out check busy road etc.. write yourself a list of what you want for your pet .

c)Be up front about any behaviour and veterinary needs.

d)Check if they work and what time they have to care for the pet. If you make an agreement then write it down and all parties sign it. I.E if they move and you want to maintain contact.

e)Never give a pet away free to good home always have a set donation/price to prevent impulsive people. If they meet your pet, always ask them to go home and think about it before taking it.

And if its a dog please be aware of the returning of the dog if it doesn't work out(have an arrangement to suit both parties). its important to thourghly assess the potential owner if you can.

I have been homechecking for 20 years not just for pawss, I have helped the Blue Cross. If you need help with checking out potential owners I am happy to help give advice and in some situations I am willing to do local visits. Please email me for Homechecking form or discuss your needs for your pet.

Its a great information.  Like the dogs I have experienced the tendency of returning of cats...can you help out in that case also?  Is there any provision for that too?  As you said agreement is must to take any further necessary action against the other party if such situation arises.

Thanks Austin, sorry for delay in replying:) yep cats too can be returned and had happened to me last year...Its never easy to ensure you have the right person for that cat..I feel matching the home an owner to the best of your ability and making a few visit so the cat and person bond helps. After care checks have always helped me to see that the animal has settled.. hope that helps
